-
we will be heading south along the
foreshore to
Port Mulgrave... which means you will be exploring
a site of Special Scientific interest 'SSSi'
with an experienced guide...
-
this
is an opportunity for you to go
beachcombing
with someone who is very knowledgably about our foreshore... Sean
will be pointing out all the 'useful flotsam and jetsam' to be found...
-
jet...a
quite dull looking piece of 'stone' really... but when polished and
carved can be made into wonderful jewelry... Queen Victoria wore it after
the death of her beloved Prince Albert... which lead jet to become the jewelry
of mourning... jet is found in seams in the cliff but as the sea erodes
the cliff jet breaks free... collecting in secret pockets along the
foreshore... which Sean
will be able to lead you to...
-
there
is a long history
of mining in
the area... which continues to the present day... Potash
is mined today whereas once it was jet...
alum...
and iron stone
that was been extracted from the area...
-
something
else to be found along our foreshore are fossils...
this area is renowned for it's wide range of well preserved fossils... dinosaur,
marine reptile & fish remains have all been found on this coast...you should
be able to find some excellent ammonite
and belemnites specimens...
Sean
knows all the best spots...
-
along
the way we will be hauling in the lobster
pots... this
will give you the chance to learn how to check
& bait pots for lobsters and
crabs... and stay within the law...
there is a strict by-law in force to conserve
stocks...
hopefully... the contents of the pots you help haul will contribute to the seafood
themed picnic
we shall be having in Port
Mulgrave at
our fisherman's hut...
-
learn
what to do when checking
and baiting longlines
set from the shore... under
Sean's watchful
eye...
-
while
walking the foreshore... listen for Sean's cry of 'there's a
......' if your quick you might just manage to see a peregrine
falcon...
or a whimbrel...
Sean wouldn't describe himself as an expert ornithologist ... but maybe a
gifted amateur...!
-
this
area is steeped
in history...
dramatic tales and stories abound... along the way and around the picnic
table we
will share with you the local customs
& traditions...
-
the
main 'roadway' in and out of this area... before the railway came... was the
sea... shipwrecks
litter the seabed along this coast... Sean
has found most of them... they make for great fishing
opportunities...
-
Port
Mulgrave... as the
name suggests... was once a port from where locally mined ironstone was shipped
from... today
the harbour is no more ...but Port
Mulgrave is full of fishermen's huts... it's here that a
picnic lunch will be
waiting for you...
-
there will be plenty of time for you to
explore this part
of
the rugged north east coast... before a climb up the cliff... then it's a scenic
walk along part of the Cleveland
Way... with wonderful views out to sea...
along the coast Boulby Cliff
dominates the vista... the walk will bring
you back to Staithes down Church Street which leads straight down to the
harbour...
